Gold 401k Deductions
What’s the best vehicle for investing regular amounts in Gold, similar to payroll deductions to invest in 401k?
Right now, I’m preferring physical delivery of Gold when I invest but am not sure if I can do this in any automated monthy program like a 401(k) program, that doesn’t just connect to a mutual fund tied to gold. With all the financial problems in the country of late, I’m not trusting paper as much for my TOTAL portfolio, so in the interest of diversification and hedging, I’m shifting more into physical gold.
Do you know of any automated way to invest in this monthly so I don’t have to monitor and make the purchase on my own each month?
anyone hyping gold now is doing so only to ensure that the price remains stable so they can sell what they already purchased a long time ago. all the profits from gold have been taken…
That being said, Code section 408(m) says that neither an IRA nor an individually directed 401k account can hold any “collectible”. Collectibles include precious metals EXCEPT for certain Treasury-issued gold, silver or platinum coins or pure bullion. Bullion must be held in the possession of a bank trustee, not an individual trustee.
So, what you would have to do is do it outside of any retirement plan or the costs would outweigh any potential gain that you might reap as bank trustees are very expensive. Next, you’d have to consider the cost of making monthly investments in that the fees associated with multiple small purchases rather than single ones would again likely outweigh any gains.
So, while it can be done…may not be worth it unless you’re completely in fear of the market and our country imploding. In which case the entire worlds economy will also fail. At that point gold isn’t worth that much either as the days of trading gold for goods have gone the way of the horse and buggy.
