Penalties for early withdrawal on an IRA (individual retirement account) before age 59 1 / 2 are stiff. You must pay federal taxes on the withdrawal amount (and sometimes state income tax), plus they must pay a federal penalty tax of 10% on the amount withdrawn (and penalty State tax according to the state where you live). Thank you God! You might as well take the money (dare I say?)-A credit card.

If you're short of money here are four ways you may be able to avoid a penalty (but not taxes) the amount withdrawn:

4. Pay for health insurance if the taxpayer has been unemployed for a specified period. See Publication 590 (2008) for more details.

Get the latest decision from the IRS for more details to see if you qualify. Tax law is evolving and they do not want to pay the penalty if it can be avoided.

IRA (individual retirement accounts) is not made for retirement savings and must be treated as a long term investment.
