With more professionals traveling around the country and the world for business it is no surprise that the electronics they use daily are shrinking to make traveling easier. Computers have shrunk from the 15 pound, 12 inch screen laptops of old. To 13 inch wide screen high definition models that weigh less than 4 pounds and are as powerful as any desktop machine that we see on the shoulders of professionals today. For years the only things missing from the portable office was a high quality portable printer and scanner. Yes there have been several models through the years but many of them left a lot to be desired when it came to speed, cost, and quality. This is no longer the case as today’s portable devices very close to typical home and office products that quality and speed no longer need to be sacrifices when on the road.

Despite the ability of 24 hour printing services in many major cities there are still times when last minute changes to a document, presentation, or contract need to be printed on the fly. Not all meetings will occur in major cities so the needs for a printer can be high and not all hotels will have one available for its guests. It is in these cases that a small high quality printer is an indispensable piece of equipment for the business traveler. While typically these printers are not made for heavy duty use like typical high end office printers they should have no problem handling any printing need that could come up while on the road. This includes a small number of multi page reports, sales letters, contracts, and even photos.

A scanner can be just as important on the road as a printer. While it does not have the range of uses as a printer if you have need of a fax machine with none in sight scanning a document and sending it via email is viable solution to a fax machine. It also has its advantages that documents can be sent while on the phone with someone who may not have access to a fax until business hours the next day. Scanners come in all shapes and sized, but typically a full page scanner will be a slim model that feeds the page through some rollers rather than a typical scanner that looks more like a copy machine. Also scanners can be found that are used solely for business cards to help keep track of information for new business contacts and potential clients in a digital format.

One of the few drawbacks of smaller printers and scanners can be pricey. For printers ink is usually no different price or technology wise than a typical inkjet or laser printer. Because of this there shouldn’t be any problems finding ink and no surprises price wise if replacement cartridges needs to be purchased while on the road. With the few portable laser printers available you may have a more difficult time finding a local supplier for toner so it may be best to check the levels before leaving for a trip. The printers themselves are a little on the high side price wise when compared to home inkjet printers. They typically range from $60 to $150 be it online or in a brick and mortar store. Scanners can also be as pricey but can be found between $25 and $100 depending on the type of quality desired.
