Gold 401k Investing

Is Gold really a good long term investment?
I am absolutly new to investing or even toying with the idea of saving for my old age. I don’t really understand about 401k and IRAs too awful well but I do have a military thrifty savings plan.
Anyway, I keep hearing ads about buying Gold and Plat and how it’s a great idea. Personally (and unknowingly assume) think this is a good idea but I don’t want to throw good money to a bad idea.
Any help would be wonderful. Thank you!
Gold and Platinum can be a small part of a well thought out asset allocation. Maybe 2% of all your retirement money.
As far as “is it a good investment”…In January of 1980. It took 27 years to hit that price again (after dropping). Sure people say “this time is different”…… but the price of gold can change in an instant. Don’t bet your future on it.
