Gold 401K

is there anything i can do with my money instead of having it sit in a savings account and not make much int?

I have a few thousand sitting in my savings account and i was wondering what can i do with it while i go to school and finish my enlistment for the next 3 years. Im so obssessed with reading financial books but right now im just at the basics. I dont want to put it into a thrifts saving plan or roth ira or 401k. But is there anything i can do with it for the next 3 years that will make my money more money? I was thinking about just buying gold or silver with it instead of having cash sitting in my bank like that

Your savings don’t really make much interest sitting in your savings account. Most of the time, the interest paid on a regular savings account can barely keep up with the rate of inflation, so the purchasing power of your savings money won’t be the same. On the other hand, it is good to have some savings set aside just in case you need it for something.

I suggest you invest in something like gold, silver, or oil.

You also mentioned finishing an enlistment and TSP, so I assume you’re in the military. If I were you, I would stay in, UNLESS you plan on going to school under the Post 9/11 GI-Bill OR you already have a civilian job lined up. I see a lot of stupid people in the military who leave their secure job in a terrible economy, without having a job lined up. Then they complain that they don’t have any money (no jobs), or they try to re-enlist. (Its pretty hard for prior service to rejoin) So unless you can find a civilian job that pays the same as your total military compensation (health care, housing food, base pay, etc.) STAY IN!
