Gold 401K

is there anything i can do with my money instead of having it sit in a savings account and not make much int?

I have a few thousand sitting in my savings account and i was wondering what can i do with it while i go to school and finish my enlistment for the next 3 years. Im so obssessed with reading financial books but right now im just at the basics. I dont want to put it into a thrifts saving plan or roth ira or 401k. But is there anything i can do with it for the next 3 years that will make my money more money? I was thinking about just buying gold or silver with it instead of having cash sitting in my bank like that

If you are comfortable with the risk of losing money, put it in a mutual fund account. If not, put it in a higher interest savings account such as an online savings account or money market account, or put it in a CD and keep rolling it over into a new CD when it matures.
