Most people believe that an employee who participates in the 401k plan for business, there is no cost to them by their own means. Some costs are paid by the employer, but some are also paid by the employee simply does not "see" the costs deducted from your account! 401K plans are sold by different types of providers. Sometimes it is an insurance company, sometimes a discount brokerage firm (ie, Fidelity, Schwab, Vanguard, etc.).

In general, the larger the company, reduce costs, each participant will be – if you work for a company that has thousands of employees, depending on each person, their cost will be less than, say, someone who works for a company of 5 employees.

Mostly small business owners involved in the provision of benefits to employees without realizing the costs involved. Insurance companies are known to be more expensive in these cases. And you do not realize they were 401k dominant suppliers in the small business community, simply because many of the largest brokerages estimated, 401Ks provide small business is not profitable.

The good news is that to change. The bad news is that many small businesses have purchased products 401k years can not be real cost effective solution. So if you are an employee or an employer, you should take the time to watch what is happening in their plans to make sure you are getting more for your money.

What tends to happen with insurance companies is that their plans involve retirement annuity with a product. From the point of view investments, annuities are expensive because they contain an element of insurance and insurance expenditure of funds. Usually the cost can operate anywhere between 2 and 3% of plan assets. So if your balance is $ 100,000 401k, which is paying about $ 3,000 per year! For a majority of people think it's free.

Years ago, the plan costs are covered primarily by the company offering of the plan. The company paid the tax, and participants pay a portion of the tax costs borne by their investments. But if you look closer the investment funds within their plan, sometimes, depending on which plan is involved, you may be surprised by what you find.

The employers sell 401K plans and tell us that there is no administration fee or contract, but charges are evicted from their own investments.

So what should you do? If you are an employee of a small business owner what their 401k total fees and how they compare other options and choices available. You can create something from your employer, and may decide it is time to look more closely.
